East End Lies, lies to the people in Tower Hamlets

Lutfur Rahman’s position in Tower Hamlets Council is being seriously undermined by the Council employees. So why are they doing so? How are they doing so?

We here start that examination.

The topicality is the fact that at the latest “budget-setting” formality of the Council, there has been a significant bit of “disagreement” across the “Parties” in the Council Chamber over the role of the “East End Lies”. Officially known as “East End Life”, the title has been recently dubbed “the town hall pravda” for Tower Hamlets Council’s “executive mayor”. In a later piece we shall trace the origins of this toxicity against ethics and accountability in "locally elected democratic Council”. 

We shall show why Lutfur Rahman has been able to keep the title under COuncil funding for as long as he has done

Lutfur Rahman has shown that he prefers to cultivate privately the sources that he believes will keep him in post and most crucially may back him the next time he plans to seek the electoral stamp.

We shall examine all of Lutfur Rahman’s strategies and the £millions of the Tower Hamlets Council’s - the Tower Hamlets Peoples’ - money that he has been spending in strategic allocations, grants and supports in the belief that he will get re-elected in return.

IN RETURN is THE phrase.

He has been proven to have been wrong about the ROLE of the East End Lies.

Issue after issue of the East End Lies gets produced by leaving out the truth of what is happening in the community across the borough. And in smaller neighbourhoods and estates.

What the East End Lies does is highlight facile, plasticky stuff while concealing the truth about the cuts, the effect of the cuts. Cuts that have been going on for decades in Tower Hamlets. 

The facile focus of the “East End Lies” is rampant on the front-page of the issue dated 11-17 March 2013. 

Here is what it claims: “News from Tower Hamlets Council and your community [.]

“Free school meals to fuel the future [.] 

Mayor’s budget to fund healthy lunches for all reception and year 1 children [.]

Then there is the picture under the bold boast: “Breathing Life Into The Baths”. The Baths is the Poplar Baths.

This has been a topic of exceedingly disproportionate claims by the Council’s bureaucracy.

The Poplar Baths have been falsely linked by the Council’s PR script-designers to the untrue suggestion that the controversial and partial reinstatement of the former Poplar baths has been addressing the serious housing and social needs in the Borough. It is absolutely true that the Poplar Baths project has addressed some needs. But it is utterly untrue that it has addressed the main needs in the area for housing and other services.
