This morning’s confession by Douglas Alexander to Labour Party candidates being of poor quality and standard as reported by the Daily Telegraph is unlikely to be the last such stunt. Why is it a stunt?
Because if there is any blame to be attached to anyone in the “Labour Party Leadership” for the morass that Alexander is still not fully admitting to but which I have been pointing out for years then it is the likes of time-serving placemen like Alexander who are substantially to blame for the appalling poverty of quality candidates floating all over the UK. .

Not just in Scotland. Not just in relation to the SNP. I have been arguing for ages that the Labour Party is in fact controlled by an antidemocratic cabal that has no mandate from ordinary Labour party membership and the cabal is a deeply corrupted “inner” party operating inside the ordinary perceived, general membership-based Labour Party. .

That cabal has not been brought under accountability by Ed Miliband. It was not held to account to the Laboured Party membership by Gordon Brown and most certainly not by Tony Blair. and I am unimpressed by the fact that it has taken Douglas Alexander so many years before he could say what limited things by way of admitting to the most stunning lack of quality among Party-named candidates he has done so far. He has not said anything that is remotely original let alone courageous. .

Why Alexander has staged the stunt is not unconnected with the fact that for a whole number of reasons, Alex Salmond’s SNP is making far greater strides in Scotland than the in-house, life-time placemen like Alexander had the sense to foresee. The Labour Party faces increasingly tough challenges in Scotland which is why Alexander is speaking in these terms. .

Not because Alexander has had a sudden realisation that he should have no part in perpetuating ill-prepared, ill-briefed, ill-educated morality-free, ethics-free and ill-disposed collection of petty time-servers posing as Labour party politicians anywhere in the UK had Alexander had such a realisation then I would welcome it. .

As it is, I condemn Alexander as much as I condemn all the others who have allowed low standard or no standard to perpetuate across the UK in the name of the Labour Party. The poverty of candidates lets down the Party, without a doubt. .

What is worse, it betrays and lets down the electorate as whole. This is not good enough. And Ed Miliband had better face up this too. Without hesitation, deviation or distortion. .
