David Cameron has been accused of cronyism after a City firm which bankrolled the Tories was handed contracts worth £773.5million.
Deloitte won the deals as part of the Government’s work programme. The firm has given the party £700,000 since Mr Cameron became leader in 2005 including a £28,000 donation in kind to Welfare Minister Chris Grayling. It has a 50% stake in Ingeus Deloitte, which will pocket the £773.5million if it meets targets on cutting jobless figures. Ministers insist the work was awarded fairly. But Labour’s John Robertson claimed the cosy deal smacked of the kind of “crony capitalism” Mr Cameron vowed to end. The Glasgow MP, who uncovered the figures in a written Parliamentary answer, also revealed Treasury Minister Chloe Smith worked for Deloitte before she entered Parliament.
Mr Robertson added:
“The close relationship between Deloitte and the Tories is very fishy. One of the most senior MPs in the Treasury was on their payroll and they are getting eye-watering contracts. It brings back the image of the sleazy Tories of the past.” The Department for Work and Pensions denied there was any link between the donations and contracts. A spokeswoman said: “Contracting followed a strict code of practice and was open and fair. Ministers did not intervene or attempt to dictate the outcomes.” Deloitte stressed the amount of Government work it receives has fallen since the Tories took power. A spokesman insisted: “All our work for the Government is let through open competition.”
