The © Muhammad Haque Daily Ethical Commentary, following up the silence from the "personnel" at "ChannelS"  on the last series of evidence challenging the false and irresponsible portrayal of the UK Bangladeshis [by general implication] and the “Bangladeshi Community” as identifiable by references to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. [2]

THIS is to ASSERT on the facts that the “title” of the BSKYB Channel 814 “programme” “Reality” as shown on Thursday 24 January 2013 was inaccurate, misleading, false and irresponsible.

This is ALSO to ASSERT that the “panel members”, the vast majority, in fact 75% of them [3 out of the 4 as shown] did not say ANYTHING at all about the AGENDA of POVERTY Creation that in fact had the greatest contribution to ANY person getting g drawn to betting g and gambling in this context.

This is THIRDLY to ASSERT that the composition of the panel was based on serious disregard for the facts and a likely calculation in order to let off the really culpable state and state-linked agencies from liabilities.

This became clear when Lutfur Ali failed to diagnosis the role of the abysmally malfunctioning and dysfunctioning controlling bureaucracy of the Tower Hamlets Council.

It is impossible logically, factually, contextually, evidentially or morally or ethically to justify on the facts and in the context of the serious implications on Society and on our own community  the package as it was presented to viewers and on the record.

The Question as always is:

Why does [BSKBY satellite] Channel 814 do this kind of irresponsible, false and misleading things?

The High Street misery machines: Betting shops make £1billion a year from picking the pockets of the poor

• The number of Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) in Britain has doubled in the past five years to 32,000

• Betting shops started installing machines after gambling reforms made by former Chancellor Gordon Brown in 2001

Alan Wells has lost all he owns or holds dear. His house has gone, his job as a fork-lift truck driver too, and his wife and two children live apart from him.

They have all but given up on the incorrigible gambler who, for the past 10 years, has squandered every last penny playing casino games on the 69 high-stake slot machines at betting shops in Rochdale.

At 48, he admits his life is in ruins and he is deeply in debt. ‘I blame that on the dangerous machines,’ he said bluntly, as he emerged from bookmaker BetFred in the centre of the Lancashire town at one in the afternoon last Thursday. ‘I have lost £1,000 in one gambling session plenty of times. I even stole £8,000 from my own mother’s bank account to play on them. Now I live in a small flat alone on benefits of £200 a week and most of that goes the same way. Sometimes I can’t buy food because I have no money left.

The machines allow gambles to bet up to £100 a time in seconds on games such as roulette, blackjack and poker (file picture)(accessible on the online edition of this pice published lhsed by DILY MAIL London)

‘I used to have a little flutter on the horses when I went to the betting shop. Then one day I saw they had introduced machines and I tried one. How I wish I hadn’t. Lots of people around here like me have become addicted to gambling on them before they knew it.’

• Serial fraudster posed as undercover police officer to trick pensioners for 'wicked' £20,000 con Mr Wells cuts a dishevelled figure in a threadbare wool cardigan on a bitter winter’s day. But he is articulate and his words have a ring of truth. Thousands of Britons are caught up in a frightening gambling frenzy in the betting shops that today fill up Britain’s High Streets.

Most worrying, it emerged this week that it is often gamblers living in the poorest parliamentary constituencies of Britain with devastating unemployment who are risking the most money on machines known as Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs).

These machines allow players to gamble up to £100 a time in seconds in games such as roulette, blackjack and poker. The touch screen works so quickly that it is possible to lose thousands of pounds an hour as users try to chase the top jackpot of £500, which can accumulate in a series of spins to £10,000.

Critics say they fuel addiction to gambling and wreck ordinary people’s lives. They have a much higher payout rate than the old-fashioned slot machines and it is this that sucks in those who play them (and are ultimately destined to lose more). Not for nothing are they known as the ‘crack cocaine’ of the betting world.

And it is in places like Rochdale, home to Mr Wells and the nation’s most deprived council estate, where addiction to this drug is particularly acute. Last year, 28,000 people coined in £98 million in State benefits. At the same time, residents were gambling £72 million (including winnings) on the machines, equivalent to £340 for every man, woman and child in the town.

It is often gamblers in Britain's poorest constituencies who are spending the most money on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) It is much the same story in jobless hotspots in London, such as West Ham, Bethnal Green, Hackney and Tottenham, as well as in Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester. Lucy Powell, the Labour MP for Manchester Central — a few miles from Rochdale — has complained: ‘There is more money being spent on gambling in my constituency than by the council on services.’

The figures are stark: people in the 50 poorest areas pumped £5.6 billion (including winnings) last year into 4,454 machines at 1,251 betting shops.

This total was four times more than that gambled by residents in the 50 parts of the country with the most people in work and, coincidentally, the fewest betting shops — prosperous Henley-on-Thames in the Home Counties, for example, has none.

And few will miss the ironic — if sad — point that the vast majority of the constituencies hardest hit by this craze are those of Labour MPs. For the lethal casino machines began to proliferate only after 2001 when Gordon Brown, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, abolished duty on individual bets in favour of a tax on bookmakers’ gross profits.

As a result, the betting chains, which had been in decline, began to enjoy a recovery and the increase in business continued as customers were increasingly drawn to the newly-introduced terminals. Betting shops with turnovers of hundreds of pounds a week found they were taking thousands when they installed FOBTs.

By 2007, there were 16,380 in  Britain. Last year, this had doubled to 32,000, with William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral and Paddy Power collectively making more than £1 billion a year from the machines.

Few people are better placed to understand why this is such a problem than Adrian Parkinson. Adrian has had a lengthy career in the gaming industry and helped to develop the machines. He grew so concerned about them that he has now changed sides and runs the problem betting

'By 2007, there were 16,380 FOBTs in  Britain. Last year, this had doubled to 32,000, with William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral and Paddy Power collectively making more than £1 billion a year from the machines.'

campaign group Fairer Gambling.

He told the Mail: ‘The high stakes and speed of play make them attractive to punters. You see people on the machines for hours on end. No matter how big the win or the loss, they keep coming back for more. It is an addiction. In an area of high unemployment it is impossible not to conclude that a lot of the money going into these machines is coming from benefit payments.

‘We would like the FOBTs to be less profitable and less attractive to the gambler by making the maximum stake £2 and a much longer time allowed between bets. People are losing far more than they can possibly afford.

‘In the past the only people gambling these high sums of money so fast were high-rollers in the casinos. But the punters using the FOBTs have nothing like their skill or funds. They lose all sense of reality when they play these machines, as if it isn’t real cash.

‘I have seen High Street punters run out of money within minutes, leave the shop to go to the cash machine, then come back and start betting again. I am a member of the Labour Party, but I believe that it is the Labour Party that started this crisis and now it is their own supporters in their heartlands who are suffering the most.’

Fairer Gambling claims that betting companies are deliberately clustering their branches together on the High Streets of poorer towns (often taking over closed-down premises and nudging up to ‘pound’ stores, charity shops and pawn- brokers where rents are dirt cheap) so that a punter can move easily between machines in different betting shops and gamble away yet more money.

The Association Of British Bookmakers describes the allegations as ‘false and offensive’ and maintains that the figures quoted by Fairer Gambling are based on assumptions. However, it is unclear from its own figures how much money is involved.

But at the heart of this debate is whether the Government should intervene to rescue the High Street and protect gamblers from their own folly. Controversially, last year the House of Commons’s Culture, Media And Sport Select Committee called for the lifting of the limit of four machines per betting shop.

However, the Labour Opposition said this was wrong and sided with retail guru Mary Portas who, in a review of High Streets, called for betting shops to be subject to strict planning restrictions.

One has only to listen to the tragic stories related by Adrian Parkinson to know that unless something is done — and soon — thousands more people from all walks of life will be blighted.

He remembers a respected Yorkshire headmaster, in his 50s, who began using the machines in his home town one July during the school holidays. He was investing up to £8,000 a time (including his winnings) on them at one shop. He soon became addicted. Over a three-month spell he lost thousands and was deeply in debt. And by October he had lost the job he loved.

Gambling in betting shops rose dramatically after reforms by former Chancellor Gordon Brown to abolish duty on individual bets in favour of a tax on bookmakers' gross profits in 2001

Only a year ago, an upright working-class mother from a council estate in Salford, Greater Manchester, broke down in tears when she brought her son into a shop for which Adrian was responsible. The teenager of 19 with a job had lost all his money the same way.

Now she was taking her son to every betting shop in a five-mile area and begging them not to allow him in. ‘The lad said: “The machines are like a drug addiction,”’ recalls Adrian. ‘The mother was at her wits’ end with him.’

Then there is the case of Matt Zarb-Cousin. He is now 22 and picking up the pieces of his life after becoming addicted as a grammar school boy in Southend, Essex. The son of a businessman from a middle-class home with a caring mother, he used to pop into the betting shop occasionally to put a bet on the football.

Matt Zarb-Cousin, a former gambling addict, is now a Labour party aide and campaigns on the issue But one day, when he was just 16, he saw the machines and staked a few pounds on a roulette game and won. It was the beginning of a downward spiral which ended when he threatened to commit suicide at 20 because of his £16,000 debts.

Matt recalled this week: ‘I remember feeding £10 into the machine, placing £2 bets on either red or black, and quickly doubling my money. From that day on, I played the FOBTs every single day for the next four years.

‘At the time I had a part-time job at a call centre while in the sixth form. I earned about £650 a month, which, for a 16-year-old, with no bills to pay, was a small fortune. But I would always go to the bookies before, and sometimes after, I went to work. I bet £30 to £40 a spin at first, but it soon increased to the maximum of £100.’

He was soon caught in a trap and betting to recoup his losses. ‘I would even go to the betting shop in my school uniform of grey trousers with a blazer which had braid on because I was a prefect. But I was never stopped by the staff from going on the machines even though I was obviously a teenager and shouldn’t have been gambling at under 18. ‘I was soon neglecting my studying and my A-level results were not up to scratch and I scraped into Birmingham University, my second choice.’

Once there, Matt found there were plenty of betting shops with the terminals. ‘I used to go in every  day, before lectures, after lectures, every spare minute. I didn’t tell my girlfriend at the time and I tried to keep it quiet from my friends.

‘I was gambling my student loan and constantly extending my overdraft. One day I won £3,500 on the machines but then lost it all in one morning. In the afternoon, I lost £2,500 of my own money.’

At rock bottom, he went to the top of his block of flats and sent a desperate text to his mother as he threatened to jump off. She talked him down by phone and, finally, he stopped gambling.

'One day I won £3,500 on the machines but then lost it all in one morning. In the afternoon, I lost £2,500 of my own money.’ He last went to the betting shop in February 2010 at the age of 19 and has received therapy to wean him off his addiction.

When he left university with a good degree in politics and anthropology, he became a Labour MP’s researcher (making himself infamous last year by posting an unfortunate and rude tweet about the Queen’s finances for which he has since apologised). He has set up the campaign, High Streets First, to save town centres from their downward spiral. ‘The danger is that betting shops are turning people like me into addicts,’ he says. ‘I have changed my ways, but I am still paying off my debts from gambling. I know two people of my age personally who have the same problems as I had and half-a-dozen more who are in danger of getting addicted to these machines.’

This week, in Rochdale, I found how easy it is to gamble away a fortune on the High Street. I went into a betting shop at random and put £100 in cash into one of the machines. Then I placed all the money on a bet on red on the roulette game. I had to simply touch the screen and press a button. It was that easy.

As the roulette wheel spun, I hoped for the best. But I lost my money when the ball dropped into the black 28 slot. It was all over in less than 20 seconds.

Of course, no one knows better how easy it is to lose on these lethal machines than Alan Wells. Once he became so angry about them that he marched into a betting shop in Rochdale and smashed one up with a chair leg.

‘I am not a violent man and I still see my children, who live across the road, and try to be a good father,’ he says. ‘But these machines should be in the real casinos not on the High Street where anyone can  pop in — and destroy their lives like me.’

SKY NEWS in their their morning broadcast today ran piece [more than once] from China in which the SKY NEWS reporter promoted the idea that China would be the 'most powerful' country in the world in the next four years...

My Question is: would that also mean that "China-looking" persons who have been overlooked, neglected in the past despite making original contribution or thought...begin to be given the sort of treatment that "USA-originating" persons have been given for the past '100' years [to continue the SKY NEWS reporter’s line] ?

Heather Brooke has been feted by Alan Rusbridger of the Guardian as well as being promoted heavily by the allegedly ‘critical’ ‘organ’ the Private Eye’ magazine [‘prop’ Ian Hislop].

Neither Rusbridger nor Private Eye has made the point that in Britain for decades campaigners have been battling for the very rights that Rusbridger and Private Eye credit Heather Brooke for!

This evidential diagnosis can be multiplied over a million times to show the dishonesty and the backwardness that dominates even the so-called liberal bits of the “mainstream Media” Establishment in Britain.

This goes into the core of the “ordinary” propaganda, brainwashing that is ‘perfected’ via the ‘liberal’ organs of the “mainstream”.

Something that Heather Brooke is UNLIKELY to even recognise in her coming “lecture” to be held at a location in the “Petticoat lane” area of East London on Wednesday. [To be continued]

There would be no words!

They would be unable to restrain

The experience would be too bleak

They would not be disposed at all to hearing politicos

If he does then it is time that he told us about what he knows!

So far, Ed has mumbled very safely structured sentences.

Not as poor as Liam Byrne's bankrupt note, notoriously stupidly left at the UK Treasury in May 2010 ['There is no money left'] but not very much

Ed Miliband has got to raise his intellectual game. He is playing at

And Kenya, the word, once again gets included as part of the compulsory history and biography notes... But hardly a month ago, no less a place than a very America-worshipping [by media brainwashing ] UK population was told of Britain’s unique [imperial] achievements in Kenya that had taken place on 3 March 1959.

Secret British files show Kenya massacre cover-up

By AFP

Posted  Saturday, December 1  2012 at  00:26 IN SUMMARY

• The files shed more light on the March 3, 1959 deaths during the Mau Mau uprising, which were initially blamed on contaminated water, though autopsies found the men were severely beaten. No prosecutions were ever brought

• Wambugu Wa Nyingi, one of three elderly Kenyans who last month won a High Court ruling allowing them to sue the British government for damages over torture in detention, claims he was beaten unconscious during the Hola incident

• At least 10,000 people died during the bloody 1952-1960 Mau Mau uprising against British colonial rule, with some sources giving far higher estimates

LONDON Secret documents released on Friday showed how British colonial authorities in Kenya tried to hush up the 1959 Hola detention camp massacre, in which 11 men were beaten to death.

The files shed more light on the March 3, 1959 deaths during the Mau Mau uprising, which were initially blamed on contaminated water, though autopsies found the men were severely beaten. No prosecutions were ever brought.

The papers revealed that prison camp staff made no attempt to tell the truth about what happened, while the government minister for Britain's colonies wanted the incident to "drop out of sight", according to the files.

Many more Kenyans were injured in the incident.

The testimony of a Kenyan colonial official that the camp commandant knew "perfectly well what was going on" was discounted by the attorney-general due to suspicions over his connections with a Kenyan nationalist politician.

The declassified Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) documents have been released by the National Archives.

Wambugu Wa Nyingi, one of three elderly Kenyans who last month won a High Court ruling allowing them to sue the British government for damages over torture in detention, claims he was beaten unconscious during the Hola incident.

"I suffered physical violence on my head, on my legs, I still have the scars today because of the beatings from the colonial administrators," Nyingi told AFP in an interview last year.

Britain is appealing against the judgement, arguing it is not liable and a fair trial would be impossible more than 50 years after the event.

Lawyers for the three veterans said that in light of the documents released Friday, Britain now "had nowhere to go other than to sit round a table and agree a settlement for the Mau Mau survivors".

Early public statements suggested the 11 men had died after being poisoned by a contaminated water cart.

But three days later Evelyn Baring, Britain's colonial governor in Kenya, wrote to Alan Lennox-Boyd, Britain's colonies secretary in London, to say such reports had been misleading.

"Result of first three autopsies is that in each case, death was due to violence," said his telegram to London.

On March 9, Baring sent another telegram, reading: "The injuries are reported to be consistent with being caused by heavy sticks or batons and/or boots."

As inquests into the deaths began, Baring told London in another telegram: "Government chemist told of examination water from cart and stomach contents. Both negative, no poisonous substances found."

Summing up the magistrate's findings, Baring said: "Broadly, death was caused by shock and haemorrhage due to multiple bruising caused by violence.

"Evidence as a whole so conflicting and unreliable that impossible to be certain of exact happenings on March 3 when things got out of control of one man.

Crossrail denial of "blacklisting" is exposed by the evidence

0605 [0548] Hrs GMT London Sunday 20 January 2013

The © Muhammad Haque Daily Ethical Commentary:

Crossrail denial of "blacklisting" is exposed by the evidence that in 2012 many pro-trade union statements appeared against the Crossrail company's blacklisting activities. So where were the Crossrail propaganda personnel then? [2]
The “Eastlondonadvertiser.co.uk”
has published a claim from “Crossrail” denying that they had ever allowed blacklisting of workers to be carried out by any of their contractors.

But this is exposed as another lie because the OBSERVER [Guardian Media Group] carried a long piece in December 2012 claiming the opposite.

Crossrail has only now come out on the issue because of last week’s “debate” at the London Assembly [which we have commented on already].

We have EXPOSED ‘East London’ Member for the London Assembly John Biggs for his pathetic role, as we identified him as a player of the callous role over Crossrail’s other, the more serious attacks on the community, as had been planned.

Khoodeelaar! STOPPED Crossrail from doing the attacks, we reminded Biggs last week.

Here, just for reference, is a Internet piece from one of the pro-trade union sites:

The © Muhammad Haque Daily Ethical Commentary: UPDATING the record and contextually commenting ion the LYING role by the Big-Business-Stooged MPs and Peers who were stooged to peddle the Big Biz lies in the name of “transport” [6] 1400 [1345] Hrs GMT London Saturday 19 January 2013:

... And that London’s transport infrastructure is a letdown, because most of the existing tube network is in bad urgent need of repair that would need £Billions.
The £Billions that have been wasted by The UK Central Govt, by its daft Dft.....
These are the key points that KHOODEELAAR! has been making n ow fro NINE years>
These arguments are worth £Billions because if implemented they would have saved London and the UK Economy £billions.
What is even more worthwhile for humanity and for Society is that the improved transport in London would save lives!

But the UK Parliament has been stooged [made to serve the orders of wrongdoing forces] to those who ant to strategically divert public attention from the real issues and instead channel the funds to the pockets of Big Biz contractors. Those contractors got huge public cash into their pockets via their agenda pushed in the name of Crossrail and via the 2012 Games Hosting adventures.

When the UK House of PEERS ‘Crossrail hole agenda subcommittee’ chair lied about the campaign against the Crossrail hole plot that Khoodeelaar! has been mobilising.

Why did he lie?

Because the PEERS were TOLD to do so by a Big Business agent who had been told off by Khoodeelaar! for his previous lying.

What is more, Khoodeelaar! said to the liar that he, that liar, had no legal let alone Constitutional right to assume that he could speak to Khoodeelaar! on behalf of “the Parliament"..

But the fact that the PEER lied proved beyond any doubt that a PEER could be used to peddle a particular untruth.

There have been several instances of MPs and PEERS being used by Big Business to tell lies against the campaigners opposing the Crossrail hole.

So persistent were the lies and the inanities that Khoodeelaar! decided to demand that the would be appropriate amount of time and space given by the Big Business-stoogedBusiness-Stooged MPs for Khoodeelaar! to formally state the objections that had already been made to the DfT and to the Secretary of State and been published by KHOODEELAAR! in the public domain.

But the MPs/the PEERS did not have the intelligence or the ethics to face up to those grounds, those arguments.

So what did they do?

They decided to lie.

And what was the lie?

They LIED that Khoodeelaar! was not “appearing before the Committee to give the evidence against Crossrail”!

That was an utter lie.

Quoted by AADHIKAROnline © Muhammad Haque Daily Ethical Commentary:

London Friday 1540 Hrs GMT

Friday 18 January 2013

Quoted by AADHIKAROnline © Muhammad Haque Daily Ethical Commentary:

"The monitoring officer of Tower Hamlets, Isabella Freeman, is also the assistant chief executive for legal services, and the monitoring officer is also the person who advises the mayor. There is now a situation in which the monitoring officer, who advises the mayor and polices the regime, regularly investigates complaints by a member of the mayor’s cabinet. On the other hand, complaints against members of the group who support the mayor have not been taken forward for investigation, which inevitably raises concerns as to who monitors the monitoring officers in such cases. In that case, the monitoring officer is herself in dispute with her employer—the authority—and there is apparently an industrial tribunal case ongoing, but the monitoring officer still sits in and carries out her functions, even though they involve councillors who may be witnesses to those proceedings.

Tower Hamlets has reached the extraordinary stage of members from several parties passing a motion to have certain disciplinary steps taken in relation to the monitoring officer. We might have thought that the monitoring officer would have withdrawn from the meeting at that point; instead, she insisted on remaining, and noted what was said by every member, which hardly gives the impression of an unbiased, open and transparent approach. Freedom of information requests in relation to only two of the complaints have revealed that some £6,000 of public money was spent on investigating a complaint against the leader of the Conservative group and that some £12,000 was spent in relation to a complaint alleged against the leader of the Labour group. No such complaints have been taken forward in the same way against the group that supports the mayor.

That may be a particularly egregious example. At the same time, however, members raised complaints with the monitoring officer about a highly partisan publication, East End Life, which is the subject of great controversy, and the monitoring officer responded that everything that the mayor had put in that publication was in order. The same monitoring officer gave advice that the mayor was not obliged to answer certain questions from members in the council in relation to the exercise of his functions

India Gang rapes, murders, violence: Who's banking on Bollywood DIVERSION Now?

The © Muhammad Haque Daily Ethical Commentary:
Bollywood, here comes the next violation, a violent diversion away from the duty that the “biggest democracy” has simply failed to deliver: Protect the women, the children and the other targets and sufferers of violence that proliferate in india most ruthlessly daily [4]

I am concerned that the vast majority of violent attacks in India will be treated to a very powerful brainwashing "solution" with dozens if not more of "entrepreneurs" - including some e with links with so-called liberal outlets in the UK and the USA - getting into the "move-making" business.

This, in my view, is the biggest weakness of the Indian Society!

That it has relied too much on the power of the Bombay Movie brain washers to do the job that the real life decision makers cannot provide.

Send the people to sleep!

When I did some field work in central Calcutta [Oops! Kolkata] and included in my evidential itinerary a long list of "movies" which I suffered in some of the most terribly unhygienic and anti-socially configured and architectured of "cinemas", the one thing I invariably came across was the certain dearth of anyone to talk to about the stupidity of the script and the dense, coarse vulgarity of the contents with hardly any social commentary whatever.

Now, I hear that the "movie-wallahs" are moving in!

I shudder !!!

The following has just been posted on the “eastlondonadvertiser.co.uk” web site, in initial diagnostic response to the role by John Biggs who has been in post as the East London member on the London Assembly

“KHOODEELAAR! told John Biggs so!

For years! That the antisocial elements that controlled the Big Public Money projects like Crossrail were disrespectful of Society, of ordinary people and that their "promises" of good conduct were false as they had been intended to BE FALSE.

John Biggs should have listened to KHOODEELAAR! then and should have supported the call for accountability, respectful conduct and honest delivery by Crossrail. Biggs didn't;t do so.

Now, YEARS after KHOODEELAAR! banners were first raised NINE years ago - to defend the community in the East End and to campaign for rights across London against Big Biz and their stooged holders of “elected publicly paid posts, slots and "careers"” - Mr “Biggs” is belatedly coming across as having some sort of concern about Crossrail’s behaviour!

And that too only after long and bitter campaigns by some conscientious members of a specifics number of trade union activists.

Must do much better that this, Mr "Biggs"!

http://www.ekklesia.co.uk/node/17816Disability activists held a vigil at lunchtime outside the High Court in London yesterday, highlighting Work Capability Assessment injustices.

The vigil was highlighting calls for a judicial review to assess whether the government's welfare benefits tests discriminate against people with mental disabilities and learning difficulties.

Two disabled people have taken the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to court to demand a review of Work Capability Assessments, which are used to decide if people receiving Employment Support Allowance are "fit for work." A ruling in the case is imminent.

Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) and the Mental Health Resistance Network (MHRN) both point out that it is impossible for most people with learning difficulties to "self-report" on their ability to work, as claimants are required to do on pain of losing benefits.

People with mental disabilities often have changing and hidden symptoms that assessors employed by much-criticised private contractor ATOS ignore or are ignorant of, critics say.

This is one of several reasons why they are not properly competent to decide on a person's ability to work. Moreover, the government's Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) only seeks further, independent medical information in rare circumstances.

Those lobbying for change and against the government's current policy and procedures say that the DWP should look at specialist evidence in every case involving someone with a learning difficulty or disability.

Paula Peters, who suffers from both physical and mental disabilities, told the Morning Star newspaper: "There is a lot of ignorance around mental illness and most people, including Atos doctors, assume if they can't see your disability then you don't have one."

She added that the sheer number of successful appeals against Atos, which holds a multimillion-pound contract for the work, justifies fines.

DPAC's Andy Greene said" "The assessments are designed to rob disabled people of the benefits they need to survive while the government shovels public finances into the pockets of private businesses like ATOS. But disabled people will fight back - in the courts, in the streets, in Parliament, whatever it takes."

Meanwhile, the latest changes to ESA being proposed by the government have been criticised in detailed by an expert group of disabled people in a new Briefing on Employment and Support Allowance (Amendment) Regulations 2012 (http://www.ekklesia.co.uk/ESAbriefing), co-published by project leader and disability campaigner Sue Marsh and the beliefs and values think tank Ekklesia.

Additionally, at 9.30am on17 January 2013) the first House of Commons backbench business debate will be on ATOS Work Capability Assessments (member in charge: Michael Meacher, Labour, Oldham West and Royton).
