Nick Clegg has protested that he is a ‘human being, not a punchbag’ as he revealed even his young son is asking him why he is so unpopular.

In an extraordinarily candid interview, the Deputy Prime Minister said he ‘cries regularly to music’ and admitted the vitriolic criticism levelled at him had left its mark.

Mr Clegg told socialite Jemima Khan that he worries about how attacks on him are affecting his family.

‘What I am doing in my work impacts on them emotionally, because my nine-year-old [Antonio] is starting to sense things and I’m having to explain things. Like he asks, “Why are the students angry with you, Papa?”’ he said.

In the interview, published today in the Left-wing New Statesman magazine, Mr Clegg said he and David Cameron – whom he referred to as Dave – are not ‘mates’ and revealed he does not want to be in politics for his entire career.

‘I think that’s deeply unhealthy,’ he said. ‘I look at those people that got into politics when they were 16 and are still at it in their late 60s and think, “My heavens above!”’

Mr Clegg said, after politics, he hopes to go into education.

The Deputy Prime Minister singled out Labour leader Ed Miliband – who has called him a ‘tragic figure’ – for making personal attacks on him.

Mr Clegg said he considers Mr Miliband a ‘perfectly nice guy’ but said it was obvious that he was not in control of his own party and so sought to keep his troops happy by ‘ranting and raving at me’.

However, he conceded that he had been hurt by attacks on him since he joined the Government, in particular over his U-turn on university tuition fees.

In one incident, dog excrement was shoved through his door and he has been spat at in the street. ‘I’m a human being, I’m not a punchbag – I’ve of course got feelings,’ Mr Clegg said.

‘I increasingly see these images of me, cardboard cut-outs that get ever more outlandish.

‘One thing I’ve very quickly learned is that if you wake up every morning worrying about what’s in the Press, you would go completely and utterly potty.’

Mr Clegg insisted many members of the public express support for him, but often whisper their congratulations, ‘as if it’s a guilty secret saying anything nice about Nick Clegg’.

Of his university fees U-turn, he said: ‘I have a rather old-fashioned belief that you’ve got to stand by what you’ve done and take the consequences, good or bad.’

But he claimed that scrapping fees was not, in any case, one of his main manifesto priorities.

‘I didn’t even spend that much time campaigning on tuition fees,’ he said.

Mr Clegg said the Lib Dems had had to abandon their traditional stance as the third party criticising from the sidelines. ‘I don’t even pretend we can occupy the Lib Dem holier-than-thou, hands entirely clean and entirely empty type stance,’ he said. ‘No, we are getting our hands dirty.’

The Deputy Prime Minister insisted that his relationship with Mr Cameron is not particularly close, saying they had played tennis together only once.

Mr Clegg said he knew nothing about Mr Cameron’s relationship with media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s inner circle. It emerged earlier this year that the Prime Minister attended a dinner at the Oxfordshire home of Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of Mr Murdoch’s News International.

‘Look, you’re putting me in a very awkward spot,’ Mr Clegg said. ‘If you’ve got an issue with it, speak to Dave [Cameron]. I don’t hang out in Oxfordshire at dinner parties. It’s not my world.’

AADHIKAROnline © Muhammad Haque London Commentary on the operation of the political agenda via the ITV Breakfast [an AADHIKARonline coinage follows] soapy sofa as fronted by the deceptively accessible faces typified in this clip I am diagnosing this morning.
The contents are broadcast under a safe ITV agenda. It is a solidly status quo agenda and it carries no evidence of any intent to audit the ones in power.
The clip also contains the predictable references to Nick Clegg having again come unstuck. But the ITV 'experts', Sue and Cordelia fail to show the contents of their own brains. They play it safe by relying on the tabloid papers' own in-house little tricks and biases. This is not good enough. Society, or what is left of it, deserves the likes of Sue and Cordelia to justify their own positions by talking substance when they are presented to the public as being worthy of our ‘watching’ them. Do THEY know of any real parental links?
How ARE the British broadcasting hierarchies created and maintained? How are they Graded [Oops! a name was intentionally dropped here]? What is MORE to the point, what sort of LINKS actually determine the contents of the ITV and the BBC and the SKY agenda?
How are the guests a who appear as s talking heads selected?
And a host of similar questions and issues.
It would be incredible if either Sue or Cordelia got where they are today without SOME sort of help similar In KIND [not in volume perhaps] to the double-measured one to which calamity Clegg admitted during his feigned frankness during Tuesday 05 April 2011.
In the East End of London, the sort of links and word of mouth privilege that Clegg has now confessed to will be scarcely unheard of. What IS heard of and is on the increase, in some SIGNIFICANT part of the population in the borough is the ‘next’ type of ‘link’. This is a link that is created by the pursuit and acquisition of the funding and the publicly funded positions and facilities. I have been head-banging about this as one of my original empirical and diagnostic areas since before Ken Livingstone staged his coup against Andrew Macintosh in May 1981 following the 'official' announcement of the then just held Greater London Council [=GLC] elections [May 1981]
What ideology do I follow in this? My own. I have this quite easy to convey ideology: look for the evidence and tell the truth. It includes all the people who want the truth and it is very useful in exposing those who want to hide things. Now, do the CONDEM pair want to tell the truth or are they on another hype trip today? Is Cameron going to hype on yet another facet of his assault on Society? Of course he is. So what will it take before Cameron makes another series of confessions and actually does it: starts to tell the truth and nothing but the truth?
Will that ‘habit’ spread to Society too? Will there be any evidence of the local Councils telling the truth to the local people? Chances are that the ones in power won’t want to tell the truth to the people. This creates the same question: are the people in Britain awake enough to expose the lying politicos of all parties and Parties? This remains the question. NOT the fakery and the fraudulence fabricated by CONDEM Clegg and CONDEMNABLE Cameron . This ought to be answered by the end of the day. In context. In ethics. In morality. in true democracy and accountability. But it will not be. [To be continued]

EAST END CAMPAIGN FOR A DEMOCRATIC COUNCIL, BHANGEELAAR! Challenges Tower Hamlets Councillors ...
That challenge is to “all the elected councillors on Tower Hamlets Council [to join the community and to take] part in a political march calling for the people of Tower Hamlets to be properly recognised”.
This genuine grassroots democratic action campaign challenge has been made in the last 30 minutes on the London GUARDIAN web site.
The Guardian LONDON BLOG had earlier published a piece by Dave Hill bringing upto date [in his subjective view] the facts of Tower Hamlets being the only Olympic London Borough that is being left out of an Olympic event.
Responding to that comment, the BHANGEELAAR! Campaign against an elected executive mayor in Tower Hamlets has posted this on the Guardian London Blog:
[The full texts of the BHANGEELAAR! comment on the 2012 Games Hosting bureaucrats excluding Tower Hamlets from the main events schedules] FOLLOWS

Dave, at the time of writing, we notice you have presented five separate items of your ‘case’. This editon of your blog plus three ‘responses’ and then a reference to your long plug for the Lutfur Rahman-imaged Tower Hamlets Borough Council dated in February 2011.
You may not have the space or the editorial scope to carry all the evidential replies that arise. However, we shall record a few of the most pressing evidential points for the time being. We shall attempt to come back should that too become evidentially necessary in context. We entirely agree with your statement in your main blog:
“What is beyond dispute is that Tower Hamlets has become an Olympic borough that will not host an Olympic event." Your blog makes all causal references for this state of affairs to Locog , Seb Coe et al.
It presents Tower Hamlets Council as being left helpless to much beyond their claimed bid for judicial review. You have left out some key facts.
While we agree that the 2012 Games Hosting bureaucracies and Seb Coe have made the decisive decisions leaving out Tower Ha,tes as you state, we do not see any evidence to substantiate any claim by Tower Hamlets Council -whether already made or potential likely to be made - to the effect that they had been left helpless. We have argued - and we have told you in very brief terms but consistently since we agreed to post on your blog beginning in September 2010 - for the appearance of an active and a democratic council in Tower Hamlets.
Here is a clue as to what we mean: wouldn't Seb Coe et al get a good political reminder if all the elected councillors on Tower Hamlets Council joined the community and took part in a political, march calling for the people of Tower Hamlets to be properly recognised ?
We are making this call here and we shall post responses or lack of them for your visitors and readers after a reasonable time in context.
