39th year of the Campaign defending the community in the East End against THAT Sunday Times Colour Magazine attack on the Seelottees

Sylhettis

That was THE first political campaign organized across the UK by the group set up in Tower Hamlets in December 1973.

Until then, there had been no politically organized forum that showed any collective or recognised or even admitted awareness on the part of what is now known as the Bangladeshis community in the UK of their relationship with the Society in Britain.

Whatever “political” affiliation they had was to do with what was going on the former East Pakistan or Bangladesh [since 16 December 1971].

The campaign to set the record straight about the Sylhettis’ role in the creation of the state of Bangladesh was mounted by Muhammad Haque and supported by Abdul Aziz.

This was to stop the poisonous lie that the 1971 Bangladesh “Liberation War” had NOT been supported by Sylhettis did not support that effort!

The wider and the longer lasting implications of the campaign against the Sunday Times Colour Magazine piece “The World beyond the Curtains” was conducted by the formation of “Sylhet-Bangladesh Friendship Society”.

Muhammad Haque created that formation and was supported by a number of others including at that time a group of students that Haque was engaged in supporting.

THIS is the overdue UPDATE that will continue.
